baby 5 weeks old and has bad cough ? My baby is 5 weeks old . . 6 weeks on tuesday . . For the past few days he has had a very bad cough and it is beginig to sound more sore. He is also boaking quiet a lot as if he is going to be sick ?? he has brought up his bottles twice now . . one yesterday at night and one to day when i was burping him he coughed and brough everything up ? is this anything to worry about ? should i take him to hospital ??

Lisa K replied: "My son has reflux. I know he's going to puke when he coughs after he finishes his bottle. Does your baby arch his back during feedings? Arching the back, sticking the legs straight out, crying, coughing, hiccups and sneezing right after feeds are all signs of reflux. Call your pediatrician and try to get him in soon to get checked out."

remigirlrottweiler replied: "Yes , especially if he is running any type of ( even a low grade fever ) because at this young age he has no emuine system to build on and his little system is to weak to fight off anything . I was at the Hospital with my 4 week old and I was scared to death because his tests all came back normal / no flu , no nothing so be very careful . Take him today to your Pedatrician ....today .... I hope he gets better soon . I'm sure your very concerned as i would be too . Mommy of 4 youngest is 15 weeks old Sunday .... Tonya"

jaime r replied: "at 5 weeks old, id say take him in...just to be safe. now that your not supposed to give kids under 2 cough medicine, i give my daughter a breathing treatment which is almost like for asthma, but it clears out her chest and lungs and calms her cough..ask about it,., its a nebulizer....good luck poor little guy!"

Rebecca Louise! replied: "take him too see the doctor if you are really worried. are you sure its the whole bottle? If hes not feeding how he normally dose then go and see the doctor if its too late and your really worried then take him to the hospital, or ring them before you go. usually when you leave the hospital from giving birth they give you a list of numbers look for these. But i think your mind will be at ease if you ask medical advice and not people on yahoo."

Rosie9 replied: "I would schedule an appointment with your pediatrician as soon as you can....the nebulizer can really help and they will give this to him if they feel it is needed. Because he is so young I wouldn't take any chances. The first 3 months of my son's life he was at the doctor's office many times - more for my own peace of mind than anything! You can also try calling a nurse and explain to her over the phone what is going on -they are usually a tremendous help!"

how do i stretch out feeding times with my baby. 5 weeks old? how can i stretch out the feeding times with my baby.....do i just let him cry until he realises he wont be getting fed yet, or is there another way to do it? any help would be fantastic

captrick20 replied: "Sounds a little earily to be trying to stretch My wife and I were told to let him feed when he wants to. The number of times per day will start to go down in time. My wife had a rough time with it."

avalonlee replied: "Ummm....at 5 weeks you feed on demand. Are you serious? you're going to let a 5-week old cry? Are you high?"

Liandrew00 replied: "At five weeks !!!!!!!! You're kidding right ? Please feed your baby when he's hungry...he's telling you something by crying and you're not listening to him."

Austinsmom replied: "At this age you need to feed every 2 hours. More if needed. They are in a growing peak. Do not feed any less during this time, it is not healthy. They need all the nutrition they can get. I know it is tiring, but it is part of being a parent. I highly recommend going to and joining the babycenter board to talk to other moms with babies born the same month and year as yours. It helped me a lot. You do not start to decrease the feedings until about 3 months old. And even then, when they are hungry, feed them! Please go to babycenter.com and research info regarding feeding."

MrChili replied: "At 5 weeks you don't. Feed him when he is hungry. Don't make him cry."

kick_ass_cowgirl_1982 replied: "you cant feed your baby when it suits you, he is letting you know he is hungry when he cries however, if you are finding he is demanding feeds every single hour, then you need to take him to a doctor... he could be crying for other reasons."

Randi22 replied: "Feed the baby! Are you trying to starve your child???? At this age you need to feed them whe they are hungry. When tthey cry sure there are a few things they may need but there bottle is most likely them main one.....There hunger will slow down as they get to a certain age...."

Macyk replied: "You should NOT be stretching out feedings with a newborn. They generally eat every 2-3 hours. Perhaps he or she is not getting enough the first time."

chloe498 replied: "I know it is very stressful at this age. At 5 weeks you need to feed any and every time he is hungry. Not only to meet his nutritional needs, but also to meet his neurological and emotional needs. Every time you respond appropriately to his cries you let him know that he matters and how to communicate. His feeding so often will end soon. His feeding WILL spread out more eventually. I try to remind myself when I start to feel stressed that this age will be over so soon and I will never have this chance to bond in this way again. Let some of the housework go, and sleep when he sleeps. Hang in there mommy. You are doing something that can't be replaced. It is worth it in the end to give him what he needs when he needs it."

momfromflorida replied: "A 5 week old don't realize anything first of all. If your baby is hungry feed him. There is no stretching feeding times at this age. Usually about every 1 1/2 - 2 hrs you will be feeding. If the baby continues to try, maybe something else is wrong. Try Mylicon drops for a tummy ache."

I have Tricare (husband is military) and just had a baby 5 weeks old and Tricare said I must use base Dr's and Tricare is Making us use on base Dr's and they only have 2 Peditriations and they can NEVER get you in for the baby. My son is due in 2 weeks for his 2 month check up and shots and they tell me they have nothing , keep calling, now they say well they will see him in mid march! He will be 3.5 moths old? How can I get Tricare to let me go off base to our dr.

Just accept it and get over it. replied: "They won't let you go off base! I have this problem too. You will have to find out what time they office opens up the phone lines for acute appointments and lie to get in and then say... While I am here.... normally that will work or do a walkin for a well baby or check ups... message me if you like."

duckygrl21 replied: "Good luck with that one. Knowing how Tricare is and operates, you should know to call far enough in advance to schedule. I never had a problem being seen, but then again we were in the Stumps, lol. Next time, try and get a back number for you pediatrician's nurse, corpsman, whatever. I actually talked my way into the Doc's acutal direct line. Try your best sneakiness, or just call and say the baby is sick, they'll see you. Best of luck. Sorry."

Angel replied: "I have the same insurance. They should have given you a list of all doctors that take the insurance, one and off base. If they didnt then you can just ask for one. Find a doc on there that you want and then call tricare to get a referral. I have an off base doctor cause i live off base, so if you live on base they might have different rules. Hope this helps"

what a sweet heart replied: "Sounds like you have tricare standard. Have you looked into the differences if you get tricare prime. I belive with prime you can go off base. Talk to your tricare representative. They should have an office on the base"

dorriewilliams replied: "With Tricare prime you have to go on base. With standard or what they used to call Champus you can go to approved doctors out in town. Speak to doctors in advance and find out if they are taking anymore Tricare patients. Some doctors who are on lists only take a certain amount of Tricare patients. Call the 800 number, not appointments but benefits and they will explain everything. "

Dave replied: "Check to see what kind of Tricare you are signed up for. It sounds like you are signed up for TRICARE PRIME, where they tell you which doctor you must see. You may want to change to TRICARE STANDARD. With Standard, you can go to any doctor you want. The down side is you have to pay a lot more deductible and co-pay. Go to the link below and check out each of the three programs."

should i be worried about baby 5 week old diagnosed with "clicking hip"? I am beside myself with worry after postnatal today diagnosing "clicking hip" we are off to see a specialist in two weeks........anyone been through this??

GillJay replied: "Yes but turned out fine - now 7 and fit as a flea!"

benandjerryluvr replied: "I have. My son did the same thing. We had to see an orthopedic surgeon. They will do some x-rays. It's usually nothing to worry about. Try to stay calm. I know it's tough when you look at your new little one and imagine all the terrible things it could be. In our case, the Ortho told us he would grow out of it. Good luck to you. Keep us posted."

Alipatta replied: "Yes. my firstborn got early scan because I had a clicking hip as a baby - congenital defect or something.... He was absolutely fine. I spent a few months in plaster casts for mine but it was before I had a memory so what's the bother? These days it involves a plastic brace to correct but it's for a short time and really not painful for the baby. Don't worry - chances are it's not much at all and even if it is, it's pretty easily fixed. Good luck from clicky hip mammy"

avasmum replied: "yip... my daughter had a clicking hip but it turned out to be nothing. at her 5 month check the doc checked her hips and said they were very strong"

3peas in a pod replied: "I am going through the same thing right now. I have a 15 week old that has an extra fold on his right leg. We had a ultra sound but all was normal. I belong to a group on yahoo called hip babys. Its for children with hip problems. I was talking to them and a couple of them said that the u/s on a child does not show anything, its the x-ray that does. I have been to 2 ortho surgeons and I am going to another one on the 2nd of April. Do NOT only get 1 opinion. If there is anything wrong and not caught then your child can have seriouse artheritis for life along with other health issues. If you need to talk please email me. This is not an easy thing to go through. Please go check out the below links also the link to hip baby is there, they have had children who have been through it all. Good luck to you."

who me? replied: "Don't worry. It almost always rights itself. They may either put the baby in double nappies (like my cousin) or a fibreglass splint (like my niece) to push the hips to the right angle till the joint matures a little. Generally about 6 months. I've known quite a few with the problem but never one that wasn't walking normally by 14 months. If they've only just spotted it, and you're seeing the specialist in a fortnight, that to me suggests that it's going to be a very minor abnormality - they usually spot it in the first day or so. Good luck. PS They never spotted mine (they weren't as clued-up in the 1950's), but I could pop my hip joints out at will until the ligaments tightened up after having Sprog2. Never stopped me doing anything!"

Sarah replied: "my daughter had a clicking hip at birth and was sent to a specialist to have it checked out. the specialist couldnt tell if the hip was just clicking (harmless) or actually coming out of lace so she has an ultrasound booked in a few weeks but the doctor checked her over the other week (about something else) and when i asked she said her hips were fine so just keep your fingers crossed. if it turns out that your baby does have a dislocating hip all that will happen is he/she will have to wear a cast, splint or harness for a few weeks to correct it and since its been caught early there is a high chance he/she will make a full recovery so try not to stress about it too much"

my mama cat has babies,5 weeks old. she is dying and won't nurse her babies. what can i do to wean them? I tried feeding them can cat food but they won't eat. How can i wean them? thanks,patchesgrannyanne@yahoo.com

Kaitlyn C replied: "You can't give 5 week old kittens solid food; they will have to be bottle-fed. Here is an article about how to bottle-feed them. Good luck!"

Emmas_mommy replied: "Oh goodness, I'm very sorry.. The only way you can help them is by bottle feeding them. And they need the formula stuff. It's the closest thing to the mama's milk that you can give them. If you give them regular milk, it may kill them because it doesn't have the nutrients and vitamins they need.. So DON'T give them just regular milk. You can get the formula and bottle at wal-mart or some place like that over by the pet food. Also, the mama licks their tummy and privates to make them go to the bathroom. So you will have to get a warm wash cloth and wipe their little bottoms and privates. Hope I helped a little!"

Fany replied: "Try Have a good day!"

Help! My baby 5 week old is constantly spitting up everything he eats!? Just the past 4 days he seems to spit up everything he eats when I go to burp him! He'll eat about 2 ounces, then he spits it up and cries, so I give him more, then he spits it up again! Sometimes it's projectile, but not always. He does overeat at times, and has gained over 3lbs since birth, so I know he's not losing weight...should I be concerned that he's spitting up soooo much ,even if he's gaining weight?? I'm confused on what to do! PLEASE help!!!!

Jennifer replied: "call the nurse? go to the doctor? dont waste your time asking people here who arent professionals when you could be risking your sons health."

QWERTY replied: "Have you thought this may be a good time to call the doctor? How are we supposed to help?"

susani0405 replied: "My son had acid reflux when he was born and he had the same symptoms. He did not loose weight just was never satisfied and spit up alot. Call your Doctor and let him know what is going on. They put my son on a medicine that worked great! The spitting up almost completely stopped. Good Luck and God Bless!"

HooKooDooKu replied: "You'll need to doct to your child's doctor, but it sounds like reflux."

1 precious girl and 1 on the way replied: "If he is formula fed, maybe you should try him on a different formula, some babies can't tolerate certain formulas, or speak to you doctor and see what they say about it."

Laura P replied: "its natural for babies to spit up...but it you arent already, breast feeding him is probably to best thing to do for a newborn baby"

francikw replied: "He could have a little acid reflux, or he could be overeating. My son did the same thing but would nurse until he was extremely full and you would think he lost everything when he spit up, but he didn't. As long as he is gaining weight and doesn't cry like he is uncomfortable, I wouldn't worry about it."

LGM replied: "As long as he is gaining weight and has at least six wet diapers a day, there is no reason to be concerned. Some babies spit up a lot and still thrive wonderfully. There is a saying 'Spit up baby, thriving baby' and it just might apply to your boy. Congrats!"

Baby Ruth replied: "he probably has acid reflux. Is he on breastmilk or formula?? if it is the last one there are special kinds for babies with reflux. You also need to take him to his Pedi so he can guide you properly. You also may want to raise the top if his crib a bit, to help avoid the food from raising up his throat. This is not a serious thing, it's treatable, but you need to take him to his pedi."

Fawn. replied: "My daughter had a similar problem... You could take him to the doctor's and see what they think. Sometimes the flap that goes over the stomach isn't all the way developed and that can cause spit up. It could also be a reflux thing, like indigestion. You can try feeding him Enfamil AR formula, it's a thicker formula made for babies that spit up. Make sure you don't lie him down right after eating, keep him sitting up for a little while, a half hour is good. That way the food has a chance to digest. But if you are really concerned, go right to the doctor's."

Morrissa W replied: "Definately see the doctor for a proper diagnosis. It sounds like it could be either acid reflux or a milk allergy. If you are on enfamil, try similac. (and vice-versa) My son was irritated by regular formula, so we switched him to Soy formula, then later soy milk. (He can tolerate cows milk now)"

Shannon replied: "Talk to your pediatrician about the possibility that your baby has gastric reflux. My son was started on medication at 5 weeks old and it helped him tremendously. He is possibly crying because of the discomfort. Babies with reflux keep wanting to drink or nurse, because if something is going down, then the acid is not coming up right then. Also, the amount of spitup always looks like more than it is - as evidenced by the fact that your son is still gaining. The medicine did not keep my son from spitting up (although it did decrease some) - it just helped him be more comfortable and sleep better. Good luck!"

Baby Chloe's Mommy replied: "Try taking his temp. If it is normal, then he has acid reflux. The doctor will advise you on what to do."

Dylan's Mommy<3 4.24.08 replied: "hey~! i know this situation alll too well. when dylan first starting 'spitting up' ( i say spit up, but mean more like covering everything type of throwing up) he was about the same age as your son . the first month they typically do fine with whatever formula or the breastmilk. then around a month is when they start with their digestive issues... such as the reflux. hes gaining a good amount of weight, and thats really your only need of concern - that and dehydration. if hes having wet diapers and hes gaining weight, the only thing you need to worry about at this point is the pain that the acid may be causing him when its on its way back up. from now on, make sure your keeping him upright for at least a half hour - an hour after he eats (which did nothing for dylan, he still pukes 24/7 lol), elevate his mattress slightly, burp him A LOT... even if he protests... otherwise it just comes back up later in a huge amount of puke... and basically, use lots and lots of burp rags. also.. make sure the nipple flow is not too fast for him. and you could even put in a teaspoon of rice cereal per four ounces of formula. be careful with that though because it may cause him to be constipated.... a refluxy constipated baby is NOT fun! they may try doing some tests or suggest that it could be pyloric stenosis. from personal experience, they tried telling me the same thing, and that it requires surgery. (if hes gaining weight, chances are its not that.. and if it doesnt hit the wall about a meter away when he 'spits up' then it probably isnt either) ... but they grow out of it. so ... wet diapers and weight gain and possibly some zantac for the heart burn and he should be okay!! :) good luck to you!!"

FMI replied: "My 11-month old had GER which is a type of reflux.. They reccomended I give her a medicine called Relan but when I read the side effects I chose not to.....that was when she was about 2 month old.... She started spitting less as she grew out of it. Now She had no reflux at all."

drattheluck replied: "Overeating, acid reflux, lactose intolerance, pyloric stenosis...?? Take him to the doctor to ask about it, and to get a baseline weight. Then, do what the doctor tells you to do, and take the baby back in as directed for check up and weight checks. What you are describing can potentially be extremely serious. At that age, babies lose weight and become dehydrated extremely quickly. If it is acid reflux, that also means your baby is in a lot of discomfort. Four days is long enough! Go see your doctor!"

rebe_salsa replied: "I had this problem a couple weeks ago (I have a 5 week old) So we burped her more often and also changed her formula. She was on Similac advance and we switched her to lactose free similac and it seems to be resolving the problem...if only now she could poop without straining for hours I'll be happy"

How can I help my 4 year old get over jealousy of new baby? I have recently had a baby (5 weeks old) and I also have a 2 year old and a 4 year old (nearly 5) who goes to school. I think although my 4 year old adores his baby brother, he is jealous too. He has become bad tempered and more upset at things than before. He has been dry since 2 but has had 2 wet accidents at school in the last 2 weeks, so unlike him. The school also say he has not been as happy at school. I have asked him about school and dont think he is being bullied or anything, he does say its unfair that he has to go to school and his 2 brothers are at home. I have tried taking him out on his own, and my husband also takes him swimming. I dont know how to make him happy again.

Bradley's MoM replied: "Tell him the little one wish they were big boys and could go to school. Ask him to tell the little ones what school is like since they "miss out" on all the fun. Make it sound like he gets to do big boy things that the little ones don't."

indianajenny22 replied: "Make him feel important by asking him to help you with little things related to the new baby. Also make sure and take some time out to spend just with your 4 yr old. That way he knows that he will get some mommy time solo."

T replied: "It seems to me that your 4 year old is feeling left out. He's proably feels that he misses out on "fun times" while at school. While its not your fault, you may be giving more attention to the youngest children (I know they require it to). Try including him in helping you out with the younger ones, make sure he knows how important it is to be a big brother. Make him think that school is the best thing in the world. He is only acting out because he wants to get more attention, even if it is negative."

Tanya replied: "make extra time for him when he is home... try to get him to be the baby helper!! he gets to "run errands" in the house, grab diapers, wipes, be the pacifier monitor, helping to do stuff will make him more a part of the baby instead of being left w/out his share of attention. usually it's more about time - the amount and type spent with the older child, than the new child itself. just ignore the potty accidents... all normal, especially during such a big transition in his life... what type of school is he in? can you reduce the number of days he's there for a month if it's just a private preschool? do they have a part time program?"

selda221 replied: "just be your self tell him that how important it is to go to school"

keishe83 replied: "OMG I'm dealing with the same thing with my 2 yr. old. He is a little jealous of his 2 week old sister. I noticed he trys to talk over everybody to keep our attention on him, going backwards in his potty-training learning, cries like a big baby over the littleist things. But what me and his dad does is give him alone time, just for him and let him know we love him the same as his new sister."

princesscs replied: "well i think you should let him participate with the lil ones getting you a diaper, hold the baby, hold the bottle fot the baby, and stuff like that. and then you should make a huge deal about what a big boy he is for going to school and pottying in the potty. remind him of the things that only he can do because he is such a big boy."

Anyones baby been on Zantac and Prevacid at the same time? My baby 5 weeks old... he thows up alot, it even comes out of his nose.. he was diagnosed with reflux and was given Zantac 3 times a day... it seemed to help with the cryin, but not with the throwin up, so now the doc added Prevacid Once a day and he is still taking the zantac... anyone else done this? Did it work.. im so over this reflux... i want my baby to get better....

Sherr replied: "IS HE TAKING THE AR FORMULA AS WELL? WHY IS YOUR BABY TAKING Prevacid"

KarenJ replied: "Wow. I have never heard of them being used in tandem. Have you seen a pediatric GI specialist yet? If so, I strongly urge it. My son's condition was finally managed when I took him to one. The pediatricians mean well, but they are not specialists. My son is on 15mg of prevacid 2x per day and has been so since he was 2.5 months (he is 6 months now). Sometimes, I need to supplement with Mylanta, but only when he is really uncomfortable (like when he is super droolly from teething - the drool makes the acid reflux ten times worse). No medicines will help him from having reflux - they will nuetralize it so that it does not burn his esophagus and cause him pain. The best way to help with the reflux itself is to keep your little guy elavated for 45-60 minutes after each meal. Burp him often (every 2 ounces). Here are some sites for resources for you: (has a chat forum with mommies who are experts on the subject and have been through it all!) (a medicine and dosing site)"

Carrying baby around the house - need ideas? Hi, I'm not keen on the baby wrap/slings & prefer something I can have my baby (5 weeks old) sitting/laying in but easy to pick up or roll around while I move from room to room. I've hired the mobile cot from the hospital which is on wheels & is only small but the hire expires shortly & I don't want to rehire, would rather purchase something outright. Any ideas? Thanks.

♥Inked mommy replied: "bouncy? pack in play with wheels?"

Apathetic replied: "Have you tried a blanket and the floor. A small playpen works too. It is a strange question though."

JustMeTiff replied: "A pack and play with a bassinett is a wonderful idea.. I pasted a link below so you can see... Best wishes..."

hotrodhc replied: "I have a bassinett that has wheels on it. It gets around the house fairly well(trailer house has small doors, but it does fit). The wheels can lock for when I get where I want to go. You could also try a carriage. I sometimes have my son sit in his carseat so I can tote him from room to room."

preginsd replied: "Maybe a travel swing? You can try a bouncy chair, but the travel swing I have has handles for carrying, so it's easier to move. How about a moses basket? Or a rolling bassinet. That's all I can think of."

Kimberly replied: "What about a bouncy seat, you can pick it up easily and it usually has toys, vibrates etc. We have the Rainforest bouncy seat and we used it alot when our baby was littler, We really don't use it anymore, she's 4 1/2 months old now, so I wouldn't spend alot on one."

kafa1987 replied: "Something like this? &&shopby=category or"

Liz B replied: "how about your stroller?"

Jamie A replied: "A bouncer or a simple play gym with a mat for the baby to lay on. Perhaps an interactive one so that when he moves his feet or hands he touches something that starts music or a noise. My daughter loved hers."

Riyens Mom replied: "i would do a bouncey or a swing, only if the swing can lean back. the front carrier is great for me and my son, but he always sits in his bouncey when i am trying to clean. maybe a bassanet that can detatch would work as well."

CrazyH replied: "I had a bassinet with wheels worked wonders!!! Bonus it had a basket on bottom so diapers and wipes and extra clothes were always on hand!! Or you could do what my sister did and use the stroller in the house...if it is not a huge one! She loved it!"

rainwriterm replied: "I agree that a pack n play may work well for you. You can also look at portable cribs since most have wheels. Have you looked at moses baskets? They don't work well for larger babies at all, but are nice for smaller babies. Yes, some even have handles on them that you can use to carry from room to room. A papasan swing like the Amby baby may be something you'd like as well. Unless you have a large house and you are constantly moving from one end to the other all day, you could get a really nice swing to leave in a central location. It seems kind of awkward to move a piece of equipment from room to room all day with a little baby when you can just leave baby in one place. Good luck!"

Erin B replied: "Bouncer!! my babies loved it!"

Red replied: "Moses basket"

sunshine_35749 replied: "A 5-week old baby is VERY young. Agree the blanket on the floor is best. Gravity works and u don't know when ur baby can move about and FALL on the floor! Is not a good idea to have a young baby sitting upright in carseat, etc. for a long time; plus, even very young babies can move about, twist themselves up, fall over, etc. You will HAVE to adjust/accept that u have a baby now! If u have problems with this, you NEED to tell ur doc and/or contact mental health."
